How often do you update your collection of craft sculpture?
Oh, that’s a question I get a lot, and the answer honestly depends on the rhythm of my life and my creative hunger. I don’t update my collection on a strict schedule like a museum does—because this is personal art, not a rotation for an exhibition. Instead, I let the collection breathe.
Typically, I refresh my craft sculpture collection every three to four months. That feels like a natural cycle: new pieces catch my eye at local artisan markets or during travels, and old ones get moved to a different shelf so I can appreciate them with fresh eyes. Sometimes, though, a piece simply calls to me—maybe a ceramic figure from a summer trip—so I’ll swap it in right away, even if it’s only been a month since the last change.
I also update when a sculpture starts whispering about wear. If a wooden carving shows a tiny crack or a stone piece loses its luster, I’ll either restore it or retire it. That’s part of caring for the collection: it’s not just about adding, but about honoring what you have. And yes, I gift away pieces too—handing a small clay bird to a friend feels like a gentle update to my own space.
But here’s my honest truth: I never force an update. My collection isn’t a checklist. It’s a conversation between the sculptures and my current self. So the frequency? It’s organic—sometimes fast, sometimes slow, always with respect for each crafted form. For me, updating a collection is less about “new” and more about “alive.”
