I totally get your worry—shipping a craft sculpture can feel like sending a piece of your heart through the mail. But with the right approach, you can dramatically reduce the risk of damage. Here’s how I make sure a sculpture arrives safe and sound.

First, start with the right materials. Never rely on newspaper or thin packing peanuts alone. Use high-quality bubble wrap (at least 3/8 inch bubbles) and rigid corrugated cardboard. For extra protection, I add foam sheets or polyurethane foam inserts that mold around the sculpture’s shape.

Second, stabilize the sculpture inside the box. If your piece has delicate protruding parts (like an arm or branch), cushion them individually with bubble wrap and tape them gently to the main body—but avoid pressing too hard. Use foam blocks or crumpled kraft paper to fill any empty space so the sculpture cannot shift during transit.

Third, use a double-box method. Place the wrapped sculpture in a smaller, sturdy box with at least 2 inches of padding on all sides. Then put that box inside a larger, stronger box, again with 2 to 3 inches of cushioning material between the two boxes. This creates a shock-absorbing buffer.

Fourth, label the box clearly with “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP” stickers, but don’t rely solely on them—shipping handlers may not always see or follow them. Instead, also consider insuring your shipment for its full value, especially for high-value or one-of-a-kind pieces.

Finally, choose a shipping carrier with a good track record for handling delicate items, and consider adding “handling” or “special care” instructions if available. I always photograph the packing process and the sculpture before shipment, so if anything goes wrong, I have clear evidence.
