How do I verify that a craft sculpture I’m buying online is actually from the artist you represent?

That’s a great and important question. When buying a craft sculpture online, especially from a gallery or platform representing an artist, you want to be absolutely sure what you’re getting is the real thing. Here’s how I would personally go about verifying that a piece is genuinely from the artist I represent.

First, always ask for a Certificate of Authenticity, or COA. Every sculpture I offer comes with a signed and numbered document that includes the artist’s name, the title of the piece, the edition number (if it’s a limited edition), the medium, and the date of creation. This certificate should be directly tied to the artist, not just the seller.

Second, look at the signature and markings on the sculpture itself. Most serious artists sign their work physically—engraved, painted, or stamped on the base or back. Ask for clear, close-up photos of these markings before you commit. Compare them with known examples of the artist’s signature, which you can often find on their official website or social media.

Third, don’t hesitate to ask for proof of provenance. I can provide a history of the piece: when it was created, which exhibition it was shown in (if any), and who owned it before you. A good chain of ownership builds trust.

Fourth, consider video verification. In many cases, I can arrange a short live video call where the artist holds or points to the sculpture in their studio. This direct, real-time connection is nearly impossible to fake and gives you absolute peace of mind.

Finally, trust your instincts but verify everything. Check for inconsistencies in the artist’s style, material quality, or pricing. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. I’m always happy to connect you directly with the artist for any additional questions—because the best verification is hearing straight from the creator’s mouth. Remember, an authentic piece isn’t just a beautiful object; it’s a story you can always trace back to its source.
