I’m worried about damaging a delicate craft sculpture during shipping; how do you safely pack them?

I totally understand your concern—shipping a delicate craft sculpture can feel nerve-wracking, but with the right approach, you can protect it beautifully. Here’s how I’d do it step by step, as if I were packing your artwork myself.

First, start by gently cleaning the sculpture with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust or loose particles. Avoid using water or chemicals that might react with the material. Then, wrap the sculpture in acid-free tissue paper or soft, clean cotton cloth to create a first layer that won’t scratch or snag details. For any protruding parts, like arms or antennae, cushion them individually with extra padding.

Next, use high-quality bubble wrap. Lay the wrapped sculpture on a flat sheet of bubble wrap (with the bubbles facing inward for shock absorption) and roll it snugly but not too tight. Secure the wrap with non-stick painter’s tape, not regular packing tape, which can leave residue. For extra safety, apply a second layer of bubble wrap, crisscrossing the orientation to cover all angles.

Now, choose a sturdy, double-walled corrugated cardboard box that leaves at least 3 to 4 inches of space around the sculpture on all sides. If the box feels too large, cut it down to size, but never let the sculpture touch the box walls. Fill the bottom of the box with a thick layer of packing peanuts, crumpled newsprint, or foam sheeting. Place the wrapped sculpture in the center, then carefully add more cushioning material around and above it, shaking the box gently to ensure no voids shift during transit.

Before sealing, place a bright, bold “FRAGILE” sticker on two opposite sides of the box, and use a marker to add “THIS SIDE UP” arrows. For extremely delicate pieces, consider double-boxing: nestle the packed box inside a larger one with another cushioning layer in between. Finally, seal the box with strong, water-activated paper tape or reinforced packing tape, ensuring all seams are covered.

A few extra tips: photograph the sculpture before packing for insurance proof, and use a shipping service that offers handling for fragile items. With these steps, your craft sculpture should arrive safe and sound, ready to be admired.
