What’s the most common material used in contemporary craft sculpture?

But if I had to pick the single most common material in contemporary craft sculpture right now, it’s definitely reclaimed wood. There’s something deeply honest about using wood that has already lived a life—old barn beams, discarded pallets, fallen branches. It carries history in its grain and imperfections.

Why is reclaimed wood so popular? First, it’s sustainable. More and more artists want to work with materials that don’t harm the planet. Second, it offers incredible texture and warmth that synthetic materials just can’t mimic. And third, it’s surprisingly versatile. You can carve it, assemble it, burn it, or combine it with metal, resin, or fabric.

That said, I see a lot of artists also leaning toward mixed media—combining wood with concrete, glass, or even recycled plastics. This blend creates a fresh conversation between the organic and the industrial. But in terms of pure volume, wood remains the backbone of contemporary craft sculpture.
