I’m drawn to abstract designs—do you have a craft sculpture that is both modern and organic?

I hear you – there’s something magnetic about abstract designs, especially when they dance between order and nature. Let me tell you about one of my favorite craft sculptures that answers exactly that pull.

It’s a wall-mounted piece I call “Flowing Knot.” The form starts with a smooth, unbroken curve – modern in its simplicity – but the material tells an organic story. I hand-carved it from reclaimed wood, letting the grain guide where the lines swell or taper. The surface is polished to a soft matte finish, so light slides across it like water over stone. No two angles look the same; some views feel sharp and architectural, while others melt into a gentle, rounded embrace.

What makes it different from standard abstract art is the touch of imperfection. I left a few subtle ridges from the carving process, and one edge has a tiny knot in the wood that I chose not to fill. These small decisions keep the piece alive – it breathes like something grown, not just assembled.

If you place it against a white wall, it stands out as a pure modern silhouette. But in a room with plants or natural textiles, it instantly belongs, as if it always grew there. That’s the magic: it’s contemporary without being cold, organic without being too rustic.
