What’s the story behind the name of this particular craft sculpture?

You know, every sculpture I make has a name before it even takes shape—but this one, this particular piece, has a name that grew out of a very quiet moment.

It’s called “Whisper of the Forgotten Fern.” The name didn’t come from a book or a Pinterest board. It came from a walk I took in the woods behind my studio last autumn. I noticed a single fern frond, curled and brown, half-buried under a blanket of damp leaves. But when I knelt down, I saw that tucked beneath that dead frond was a tiny, bright green shoot—alive, pushing upward through the decay.

That contrast—death and life, silence and persistence—struck me deeply. I went back to my bench and started pinching clay between my fingers. I didn’t plan the form. I just let my hands remember the sight of that curled fern. As the clay dried and I added layers, the sculpture took on a spiral, almost fossil-like shape. Its surface became textured like bark, but with a soft, polished hollow in the center—like a secret space where the new shoot might hide.

I named it “Whisper” because it doesn’t shout its meaning. It asks you to lean in, to touch its rough and smooth surfaces, and maybe remember your own quiet moments of renewal. The “Forgotten Fern” part honors that discarded leaf that wasn’t really gone—it was just waiting for someone to notice.

So that’s the story. Not a grand myth. Just a walk, a kneel, and a leaf that reminded me nothing is ever truly forgotten—it just becomes art.
