I’ve been around enough fairs—both as a collector and a maker—to know that the right conversation can turn a simple purchase into a meaningful connection. Here are five questions I always recommend asking.

1. “What materials did you use, and how should I care for it?”

Every sculpture has its personality, and a lot of that comes from its materials. Is it bronze, reclaimed wood, ceramic, or mixed media? Different materials need different care. Knowing whether it can sit in direct sunlight, handle a bit of humidity, or needs occasional dusting with a soft brush will help you keep it beautiful for years.

2. “How did you make it?”

This isn’t just about curiosity—it’s about understanding the work that went into it. A hand-carved piece carries a different energy than a mold-cast one. When an artist lights up describing their technique, you’ll feel that passion. Plus, it gives you a great story to tell when guests ask about your new sculpture.

3. “Is this a unique piece or part of an edition?”

Some artists create one-of-a-kind sculptures, while others make limited editions. If it’s an edition, ask how many were made. A low number, like 1 of 10, can make the piece more special and sometimes more valuable. If it’s a unique work, that’s a wonderful thing—you’re getting something no one else has.

4. “Can I see a photo of it in a home setting?”

I know this sounds a bit practical, but trust me—a sculpture can look completely different on a gallery pedestal than on your mantel or next to your bookshelf. Some artists bring photos of their work in real homes, or you can ask them to send one. It helps you imagine the scale, texture, and light interaction in your own space.

5. “What inspires your work?”

This is my favorite question. It opens a door to the artist’s world. Maybe they’re inspired by local landscapes, ancient mythology, or the texture of weathered stone.
