First off, forget flat, overhead lighting. That kind of light, like a ceiling fixture, washes out texture by casting even illumination from above. Instead, you want directional light—specifically, raking light. Imagine a single spotlight hitting the sculpture from a low, sharp angle, almost grazing its surface. This creates long, dramatic shadows in every depression and highlights every raised edge. A desk lamp aimed from the side, about 30 to 45 degrees off the horizontal, works beautifully.
But angle isn’t the only trick. The quality of light matters. Hard light, from a bare bulb or a focused spotlight, produces crisp shadows that make texture pop.
