How do I know if a craft sculpture is of high quality—what should I look for?

When I’m shopping for or admiring a craft sculpture, I don’t just look at whether it “looks nice.” Quality reveals itself in the details—here’s what I’ve learned to check, naturally, like I’m talking to a friend.

First, pick it up. A high-quality sculpture usually feels solid and balanced. If it’s supposed to be heavy (like stone or bronze), it should be. A lighter-than-expected piece can mean hollow casting or cheaper filler materials. For wood or ceramic, check for hidden cracks or uneven thickness—that’s a sign of hurried work.

Second, run your fingers over the surface. I do this all the time. High-quality surfaces feel smooth and intentional. On a metal sculpture, look for a consistent patina or polish without blotches or rough solder joints. On stone or clay, the texture should be uniform—no sharp, unfinished edges or rough spots where the artist stopped paying attention.

Third, examine the fine details. A sculpted face, for example, should have clear, natural features—not lumpy noses or eyes that look like afterthoughts. Detailed areas like hair, folds in fabric, or fingers are where cheap sculpture falls apart. If those are crisp and well-proportioned, it’s a sign of real skill.

Fourth, check the base or back. I always flip it around. A quality piece is finished on all visible sides—even the bottom or back—because a true artist cares about every angle. If the back is rough, unfinished, or has obvious mold seams or glue marks, the piece likely isn’t high-tier.

Finally, look for the artist’s signature or edition mark. Many high-quality studio sculptures are signed, numbered (if a limited edition), or have a foundry stamp. This doesn’t mean unsigned work is bad, but signed pieces show an artist who takes responsibility for their craft.

In short, high quality isn’t about perfection—it’s about intentionality. If a sculpture feels well-considered in every detail, from the base to the eyebrow curve, you’ve found something worth having.
